EMPOWERING VOICES SINCE 1993 VSA MONTHLY
MAY 2019 NEWSLETTER
HELLO FROM DIRECTOR & PRINCIPAL TEACHER PETER VOX
I hope that you all had a great month as we did! April was a very busy month personally for me on the teaching front but also very busy on the social media side. I have been doing my best to check-in on Facebook and Instagram live every alternate day to give you an insight on my day’s activities. In April we consistently released NEW video podcasts, podcasts and ASK VSA YouTube segments to great response and will continue to answer all of your questions and give you our knowledge and information on the subject of singing. Please keep all of your questions and correspondence coming to all social media and I’ll be sure to respond to everyone’s comments and questions.
VSA has a student concert on Sunday 26th of May at The Palace Hotel in Camberwell which I’m really looking forward to as we have numerous new up-and-comers performing for the first time.
On a personal note it was great to get away to the family beach house for a few days of RNR over the Easter weekend and eat way too much chocolate. I celebrated my mother’s birthday in April and I will be celebrating Tyla, my youngest daughter’s birthday and teacher Ryan Vox’s 41st birthday in May. Happy birthday to you!
Have a great month ahead.
Thank you for reading.
Be good to each other.

HOW TO GAIN ULTIMATE CONTROL WHEN MOVING BETWEEN NOTES!
I’ve been receiving a lot of correspondents and I have chosen the most frequently asked questions this month. “How can I have more control with of my voice?”
Firstly, let’s talk about “control”. There are 2 issues to do with control when singing:
1. Moving between notes (which we are going to talk about on this blog) and
2. Holding straight notes for control
Moving between notes when you’re singing – it is always happening because that’s what we do as a singer. We’re going/singing for one note to the next and this is called a “melody”. So when you’re singing, you need precise control when you are going from note to note. The most important part of control is to ensure that you landing precisely on top of every note that you are singing or going to.
Here’s the two BIG tips to help you out when you are learning your song:
If you want to be really tight and precise in the melody you need to “na-na-na” to the song firstly before you learn the words – This will greatly help you out, practice it and I guarantee you that this will help you become a lot tighter singer. Then after you have got the melody down and sing the lyric over the top.
When you are doing scales – do scales that are going to move you voice around(refer to our videos our 5 minute Singer YouTube channel https://youtu.be/ScfcIvA90aM & https://youtu.be/mLusPc01rDY ). Great exercise is to sing numbers through the scales or exercises. Because singing on the vowel will soften the note attack while with numbers, it will be more dynamic for more punchier soul/rock songs and it will also greatly help you with your articulation, pronunciation and diction. The scale on our YouTube channel will greatly help you out with your control when you are going from note to note when you sing.
Take these tips away but listening up to the chords and hear the melody in the song that you’re going to sing and landing on those notes precisely is the key for you to greatly improve your singing and control.
Thanks for reading guys, I really appreciate it!
Enjoy your singing!!

VSA STUDENTS OF THE MONTH – BEN RECHTER AND PERRY KAKRIDAS OF CIRCLES
Formed in 2010 by Ted Furuhashi, David Hunter, Drew Patton & Vox Singing Academy student Perry Kakridas , Circles have constantly been at the forefront of progressive heavy music, with their musical foundations becoming a strong component of the worldwide djent movement. Their previous releases, 2011’s EP “The Compass” (Basick Records) and 2013’s “Infinitas”, garnered unanimously positive reaction from fans and critics across the globe.
Circles are the next step in the evolution of heavy music. The intricacy, the emotional heartstring pull of the lyrics, the precision, and the sheer force of their output places them in a class of their own. The Melbourne-based, world-class outfit will unleash their highly anticipated new album “The Last One” worldwide on August 31st 2018 through Wild Thing Records (AUS), and Season of Mist (EU/USA).
“The Last One”, an album of tremendous power and lyrical inventiveness, delivers on the promise made on their Basick Records debut album “Infinitas” (2013). With former Vox Singing Academy teacher & student Ben Rechter assuming the role of lead vocalist and guitar and fellow band members Ted Furuhashi (guitar/backing vocals), David Hunter (drums), and Drew Patton (bass guitar/screamed vocals) providing a maelstrom of musical brutality, Circles have written and recorded a simply phenomenal album. The band’s uniquely designed off-kilter stadium-like riffs and dynamic grooves, exemplified in the track “Dream Sequence”, beautifully contrast with breathtaking soaring vocals and catchy hooks apparent in highlight song “Tether”, with new front-man Ben Rechter’s lush melodic singing styling instantly becoming a signature of Circles’ ever expanding sound.
