VSA’S FEATURED ARTICLE
HOW TO SING HIGH IN MIXED OR BLENDED VOICE?
In this months feature article, I’m going to discussing how to use your high mixed, crossover or blended voice. In November’s featured article, we have given you examples of some different blended or mixed voices.
Before you start using mixed or blended voice please make sure that you are completely warmed up, especially your falsetto and do a “crying scale” to warm up the top end in true voice because the crying & falsetto are very important in this scale because we’re going to be what we called at VSA revving a cry and blending it with falsetto into this particular scale to create a blended voice using both falsetto and true voice but making it sound like true voice.
Now let’s talk about mixed or blended voice:
Placement – I want you to feel that at the start of the scale the sound is being placed in the soft palate of the mouth and then sliding the sounds to the back of the head, resonating your sounds in between the ears as you go higher through the scale. No sound should be resonating in the throat.
Ariana Grande is a great example of mixed or blended voice when singing higher.
You wanted to keep moving over what we called the “crack” or the “break in the voice”. This is between the true and falsetto voices because there is a disconnect or a break between true voice and falsetto. If you move slowly through this particular register, you may hear the notes breaking in your voice. So, another hint here to cry over this area, the break – keep it light and feminine especially for the males and rev a cry through the scale. (Just little cry from the start but as you get higher put more cry through the scale) So, when doing the scales, start down low and you should be feeling comfortable and move very quickly and slide through the scale on an octave jump up or down the scale. Tighten your stomach more as you’re inclining to the higher notes in scales and keep the sound at to the back of your head.
This is a very difficult scale so please again to recap:
- Make sure that you’re warmed up
- Revving the cry through the scale
- Letting the sound slide back to the back of the in-between the ears
- Keeping the sound light and feminine
- Tightening your stomach or diaphragm as you are doing the scale.
- Keep moving through and sliding through the break-in your voice.
Thank you very much for joining me here today, I appreciate it. Hope this blog has helped you out!
See you next month!
VSA FEATURED STUDENT/ARTIST OF THE MONTH – NORTHLANE
Sydney hard-core band Northlane are VSA’s student and artist of the month for December, announce the upcoming release of their fifth studio album, Alien, out August 2 via UNFD.
Northlane have had a long association with VSA, director & principle teacher Peter Vox. Peters Association with Northlane started with original lead singer and founding member Adrian Fitipaldes, then later with current lead singer Marcus Bridge.
Northlane have gone from strength to strength with each one of their five albums. For a band marking their 10th anniversary in 2019, Alien is a bold leap forward; the work of a group fighting their way out of their corner by moving forward rather than looking back. Their previous three albums may have debuted in the Top 5 in Australia – with Node landing at Number One before going on to win an ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album, an accolade also awarded to Mesmer – but Northlane are in no mood to play it safe.
The Alien world tour has seen them sale out shows in Japan, North America and Australia. As you read they are currently touring Europe through out December and will be coming home in January to co-headline the UNFD festival and then touring nationally around Australia in January and February 2020.

TEACHER SPOT LIGHT ON RIENTS VOX
Hi Vox community of love. Just a little insight of what I’ve been getting up to.
2019 was my busiest teaching year for VSA so far! Picking up an extra day at Bayswater has been such a blessing. Now I’m doing Monday and Tuesday in Brunswick and Wednesday and Thursday in Bayswater. I’m so thankful to be given the opportunity to help every one of my students reach toward their goals and to have fun in the process.
Teacher Rients in action in a singing lesson
In other news my musical project Renelophus has released “The Blue Dot EP” on all the popular platforms in July 2019 and are well into recording a fully acoustic EP to be released in February 2020. Our worldly music showcases all of the styles I specialise in from Rap, R&B, Pop, Rock and more. Vox Teacher Anastasia Co-fronts the band and has been such a brilliant person to work with, all of her students would know exactly how wonderful she is already. Watch out for a chance to come and see us live!
I’ve been also becoming more of a personality on-line. Feel free to Follow @rientsvox on instagram and add Rients Vox on Facebook.
Vox Singing Academy for life! I’m so glad I started lessons with Peter Vox. Almost decade ago, now. To be able to pass on his knowledge for generations to come is truly a privilege I do not take lightly.
