VSA’S FEATURED ARTICLE
THE KEY TO SOUNDING GREAT. PART 1
In February’s featured article Vox Singing Academy’s director Peter Vox will be diving in deep into a subject that is so very important! To be honest it is the 2nd most important skill to do with singing behind singing in key and pitch – you are going to be learning about vowels and the different mouth shapes to make you sound great.
Vox singing academy student Alex Reade performing live at UNFD festival.
Every single student within their singing lessons at Vox singing academy will always be given this scale and the five vowels separately because it is just so important to sounding great! The reason why it’s the 2nd most important is that 98% of the time when singing you are holding vowels. When you are singing you are just going from one vowel to the next and those vowels are joined together by syllables and consonants. And folks that’s all we’re doing when singing. If your mouth isn’t moving to the right mouth vowel mouth placements then you are not going to sound the best you possibly can. So, you have to practice the vowel scale that Peter Vox is about to give you and apply them, the vowels, into your songs. This vowel scale isn’t going to improve overnight. You will start to hear and feel improvement in about 5-7 weeks and then after this time subconsciously your mouth will start forming the right mouth shapes by themselves ultimately making you sound a lot better!
Peter Vox going to give you a scale that will help your mouth move to the right mouth placements for every vowel in every song. Before we start the scale, please kindly write in big letters on this piece of paper or take a photo or scan the vowel sounds and the corresponding mouth placements that I have written below.
This is a guide for you to follow at home as you are going through this particular scale. You are going to start down low, the rule that I want you to use in this scale for both males and females is the “less down low and more up top singing principal”. Meaning smaller mouth placements when you’re singing down low with less volume and diaphragmatic support and bigger mouth placements when you’re singing up higher with more volume and diaphragmatic support. Please always look into the mirror when singing and doing all scales but especially this one as you want to closely monitor what your mouth is exactly doing for each Vowel.
Sing each Vowel separately one after themselves whilst playing five single notes in a row.
• SOUND – MOUTH SHAPE
• AIR – Relaxed in the lower range, Small smile in the higher range
• SEE – Round in the lower range, Small smile in the higher range
• HEART – Open in the lower range, Smile in the higher range
• SOUL – Open in the lower range, Oval in the higher range
• YOU – A small smile to relaxed puckered lips
Alternate each one of these vowels separately on a single note on the piano or just sing them a-cappella within your vocal range. Starting down in the lower part of your vocal range and work your way up into your higher vocal range. Do not rush the scale and make sure that you are going to the correct mouth placements for every vowel. Singing them separately and stopping in between every vowel. Remembering that every vowel has a different mouth shape. Please remember to make your mouth placements more relaxed and smaller in the lower part of your range and larger and more exaggerated placements in the higher part of your range. When done correctly the scale will greatly improve your tone and sound as a singer.

VSA FEATURED STUDENT/ARTIST OF THE MONTH – CLOWNS
Clowns are a 5 piece hardcore punk rock n roll band formed in 2009 who are signed to Shock Records/Damaged Records. Fronted by Vox Singing Academy’s student Stevie Williams who is taught by Director Peter Vox. Stevie is an amazing hard-core punk rock screamer. “We are always playing, touring and releasing music because we honestly have nothing better to do.” States Stevie.
There debut album ‘I’m Not Right’ was voted at number 5 on Triple J’s Short.Fast. Loud Top 40 releases of 2013.
2015 seen release of the ‘Bad Blood’ which was voted as triple j’s Short.Fast.Loud number #1 heavy release of 2015; it took them over the world to festivals like The UK’s Rebellion and Groezrock in Belgium and plenty of club shows in between. It found them on tour with some of the world’s most esteemed punk heavyweights such as NOFX, Rise Against and Descendent and subsequently went on to sell thousands world wide.
Their third full length ‘Lucid Again’ was a critically acclaimed hit with Rolling Stone stating “it’s hard to argue against Clowns having creates one of the best rock -not ‘just’ punk – records” of 2017. It was an affirmation of bands success with many of the songs receiving heavy radio play, creeping the bands name up festival bills over the world, selling out bigger venues than the band had ever before and eventually lead them to support Foo Fighters and play Australia’s inaugural Download festival.
2019 has seen the band release their fourth studio offering ‘Nature/Nurture’, which caught the ears of punk heavyweight Fat Wreck Chords, making them the second Australian band ever to sign to the esteemed label. ‘Nature/Nurture’ debuted at #6 in the Australian ARIA charts, has been dubbed “their strongest record yet” by Stack Magazine and is fast becoming their most streamed record!
Nature / Nurture was nominated for the 2019 ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock album.
2019/2020 has seen Clowns tour Europe and America. Clowns will also be supporting My Chemical Romance at Download Festival 2020 in Australia.
Check out the highly energetic and must see show next time they are in town.

TEACHER SPOT LIGHT ON EMILY VOX
Born into a musical family, Emily is a delightful singer from Russia, who received a fundamental classical education (vocal, piano, musical theory, solfeggio, composition) and privately trained in a wide range of contemporary singing techniques. She is also an award-winning composer, songwriter, music producer and sound engineer.
Emily in full flight teaching at Vox singing academy’s Saint Kilda studio.
Emily’s remarkable voice is now featured on over a hundred of international releases, collaborations with bands and musicians from all continents, and spanning a recording, performing, producing and teaching career of over 20 year!
Since joining VSA in January 2017, she has developed some great innovations that we are applying across the board, and has really taken her teaching to the next level by making her students the number one priority when she’s teaching and working for VSA.
Emily: “I’d like to mention a few singers that I’ve had the pleasure of working with this year. All of them supported the bush fire effort, by the way! It is so heartwarming to see our musical community come together in the time of need. THE UGLY KINGS released a new album, SULDUSK won multiple charts and awards with innovative sound and assembled a new lineup, MOUK and BLUNT COMPOSURE started performing their original songs live, THE ETERNAL went on another European tour and are preparing for their next album, PLUM GREEN worked hard and received a grant for her next experimental recording… Bet I’m forgetting someone, sorry!”
Working with rock, metal, dark-wave and gothic outfits in her youth, she gradually turned to jazz, RnB, folk and progressive metal. During her first 4 years in Australia, Emily performed as the lead vocalist of CELTIC ILLUSION and it’s spin-off ECLIPSE, where she was noted and beloved by audiences all over the world for her warm and moving delivery, unique tone and a true-diva stage presence.
EMILY: “It was heartbreaking to stop active touring due to health issues that needed sorting out, but it also allowed me to take on more responsibility and teaching days at VSA. Helping others discover their voice, open up emotionally and gain confidence has always been incredibly rewarding! And working at VSA, I have a unique opportunity to support people of all ages, skill levels and walks of life, literally anywhere on the planet. Right now, my youngest students are 3 years old twins – the time we spend in the studio singing is going to shape their life-long love and joy of music. And the most senior student is a 73 years old, he is a neurologist, works in hospice care, and singing in his life has always been a safe harbour.”
“Every student has a unique story. Some rush over to their first lesson in excitement and wonder, others already have had experience and need some tune-up, or getting unstuck. When we come for help, we all have unique challenges – and, more importantly, unique abilities. By the end every day, I cannot believe that it flew by so quickly, and wake up every morning excited, thinking – I get to do it all over again!”
